A Ship in Harbour

“A ship in the harbour is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.” — John A. Shedd 

I saw this quote the other day and it really resonated with me. 

The more I sat with this quote, the more I realised it wasn’t really about ships at all. 

It was about us. 

It wasn’t asking whether a ship was safe. 
It was asking whether I was. 

How often do we mistake comfort for purpose? How often do we anchor ourselves to what feels familiar simply because it’s safe? 

Because perhaps the greatest risk isn’t sailing into the unknown. 

Perhaps it’s never leaving the harbour at all. 

Sometimes that looks like staying in a career that no longer lights us up. Being pigeonholed into one role, governed by policies and procedures, with little room for creativity, less time for life, and even less for the people we love. 

A ship is made to weather the storms in the depths of the unknown, and so are we. Ships are made to ride the waves, not merely watch as they roll past, just as we are here to enjoy life—not merely watch each day pass while waiting for the next to be better. 

A ship is made to protect its voyagers, just as our soul is strengthened in the depths of our humanness. 

So let this be a reminder to sail out into the unknown and discover what we are truly capable of. We are made for this world. We will endure the storms and revel in the calm. 

Poem 

Do we work to live or live to work? 
Do we follow the tide or fear the surf? 
Do we settle for comfort or dare to explore? 
All good questions we’ve forgotten to ask anymore. 

Most choose the harbour because it feels secure. 
But is comfort really what we’re searching for? 
Comparable to a frog who gets slowly heated. 
Until it’s far too late to know it was being defeated. 

So become the ship that refuses to be docked. 
For the harbour is no place to spoil and rot. 

Ride the swells and trust the tide, 
Beyond the storms the treasures hide. 

Take this reminder to follow your dreams. 
To finally leave the harbour and the safety in between. 
For the view gets stale and the fish don’t change. 
So cast your line where the wild seas reign. 

Your voyagers may get seasick to start, 
But alas, there’s so much to learn; it’s truly an art! 

Just imagine if the ship never left the dock. 
There’d be no fish to chase, and no new skills to unlock. 
You’d find no treasure beneath the sea, 
no stories worth telling, 
about who you came to be. 

Believe me when I tell you the challenge is worth the trip. 

However, be warned—you may never return to the same slip.
