Unbeknownst to the Girl

Unbeknownst to the Girl

Looking back, almost every meaningful chapter of my life began with uncertainty. I didn’t know I was about to become a nurse. I didn’t know I’d become a mum. I didn’t know we’d one day pack our lives into a caravan, or that I’d begin writing children’s books. At the time, every one of those moments felt foggy. Every one carried questions I couldn’t answer, yet every one eventually became a chapter I wouldn’t trade.

Perhaps that’s the strange beauty of life. We spend so much time wishing we could see around the next corner, when the most meaningful chapters are often the ones we never could have predicted. This piece was written during one of those uncertain seasons—a reminder to myself that growth often begins long before we can see it, and that some of life’s greatest gifts arrive unbeknownst to the girl still walking through the fog.

When the way is unclear and the horizon is foggy,
No amount of worry will unstick the boggy.
We fear the unknown, but is it a gift?
If we knew how life played out, there’d be nothing to shift.

We bring new life to this world, we create flesh and bone,
Yet we let our minds run free for them to destroy our tone.

The disconnect is real, the way is unclear,
But by God, Universe, I know there is something growing here.
What to do, what to say, how to mend, what to pray?
Divine, if you hear me, I am sorry for this cloudy day.
I see all the repeated numbers, I know I’m not alone.
Please forgive me for the sadness in the depth of the unknown.
I love you forever, I know this is the irritant to the pearl.
So thank you for what is to come, unbeknownst to the girl.

Perspectives are interesting when you look through the light,
They shift and sparkle depending on the gaze of the sight.
So believe the view that reflects what you hope to find,
And the universe will reveal its magic in its own time.

You may not yet see all the way through,
And yes, the light will scatter—but believe in the view.
For one day you’ll peer through the right lens,
And see all the cracks that created the bends.
Without the imperfections, the stone is not unique;
Its story fades to silence, its colours far less deep.

One day I’ll look behind me and smile at where I stood,
Thankful for the winding path that slowly shaped me for my own good.
The answers weren’t all hidden—they were growing day by day,
Becoming little stepping stones that gently paved the way.
So until tomorrow finds me with a clearer sky to see,
I’ll trust the girl before me is becoming who she needs to be.

One day she’ll laugh at all the things she thought she’d never do,
The dreams she nearly buried and the fears she somehow outgrew.
She’ll thank the cloudy mornings that taught her how to see,
That faith is simply walking where tomorrow’s yet to be.
The road was never empty though it felt that way at times;
There was always something blooming just beyond her present mind.
